Relocation Investigations

Relocation investigations in determining the best interest of the child involve a thorough assessment of the potential impacts of moving a child to a new location, whether domestically or internationally. This process includes evaluating the child's emotional and psychological well-being, educational needs, and the ability to maintain essential relationships with both parents and significant others. Additionally, it assesses the parental capacity and the quality of the parent-child relationship, making recommendations on parental rights, responsibilities, and the child's residence. A key aspect of these investigations is incorporating the voice of the child, ensuring their preferences and needs are considered in the decision-making process, ultimately prioritising their overall welfare and stability.

Each case is unique and requires a tailored approach based on its specific circumstances. Once the necessary information is gathered, a structured plan for the investigation is developed.

Example of a Relocation Investigation:

  1. Interview with the caregiver(s).

  2. Risk Assessment.

  3. Forensic interview and assessment of the child(ren).

  4. Collateral investigation involving teachers, family, friends, and other professionals.

  5. Review of relevant documents, including legal papers and previous reports.

  6. Interactional analysis and observation of interactions between caregiver(s) and child(ren).

  7. Home visits.

  8. Submission of a court report with recommendations on the relocation, aligned with the best interests of the child.
